Fit Testing

Many employers provide respirators (face masks) to their employees to protect them from exposure to airborne contaminants such as dusts, fumes and vapours in the workplace.

The performance of respirators with tight fitting facepieces depends on achieving good contact between the wearer's face and the seal on the mask, something which cannot be assessed by eye or feel. The approved code of practice and guidance to the COSHH Regulations 2002 require fit testing to be carried out on repiratory protective equipment (RPE) with tight fitting facepieces.

People, of course, come in all shapes and sizes so it is important to choose the right make, model and size of face mask to give a good fit. This will prevent hazardous substances leaking into the respirator, reducing the protection provided.

As well as having the correct size and shape of mask, donning it correctly is important. In our experience, incorrect fitting is one of the major causes of failure. particularly with disposable face masks.

Obelisk Technology works in association with occupational hygiene specialists SGM Associates to provide a quantitative fit testing service using the TSI Portacount device. We also provide training if required to fit facepieces correctly, so that clients can ensure their employees are given the levels of protection specified for the mask.
