Policies for Large, Complex or High Risk Companies
With substantial numbers of employees, longer chains of responsibility or higher risks, it is essential that the full
details of procedures for specific risk topics are present, together with clear information on how the health and safety
system is managed - policy, organising, implementing, measuring, review and audit.
This can result in a large network, forming the heart of a safety management system containing procedures, forms and
detailed information on the assessment and control of risks. This is often considered as a Health and Safety Manual and
is likely to be intranet based to allow everyone to gain access to it.
Project
Our client, a leading construction and maintenance company with more than a thousand employees had become increasingly aware that
their health and safety manual, whilst containing a lot of good information, was out of date. It was also a large and
cumbersome paper-based system, a factor that they believed contributed to its not being used as extensively as it should.
We developed an intranet based health and safety manual, with linked sections providing different levels of detail to
suit the differing needs of various levels of management – overview, detailed policy, procedures and forms. The overview
sections were brought together in printed form, giving a much smaller reference document, useful for general guidance and
particularly in training of new managers.
The health and safety manual is now up to date, contains structured information on responsibilities, training requirements,
record keeping, monitoring, review and control measures. Both the health and safety department and the managers have a
very clear guide to actions, allowing audits to be structured on this basis.
Now that the manual is almost exclusively computer-based, keeping up to date is relatively straightforward, helping to
future-proof the company’s investment in health and safety.
